From 16–18 September, the Southern Africa Research Capacity Network (SOFAR) partner Biomedical Research and Training Institute, hosted an academic supervisor training workshop in Harare. Facilitated by Prof. Liezel Frick and Dr. Nompilo Tshuma from Stellenbosch University, the programme provided structured professional development for PhD supervisors in Zimbabwe.
The training focused on building evidence-based competencies in communication, leadership, expectation management, and feedback. This training is central to SOFAR’s mission of strengthening the research ecosystem in Africa.
By addressing the full supervision journey—from student selection to progress monitoring and examination—the programme aims to enhance doctoral completion rates and elevate research outcomes. Participants engaged in interactive discussions and practical exercises, enabling them to apply supervisory theory directly to practice.
