New research from THRU ZIM is providing important evidence to inform the care of children and adolescents living with perinatally acquired HIV.

Drawing on findings from two randomised controlled trials—the VITALITY and BREATHE studies—researchers have identified effective approaches to managing two common HIV-associated complications in young people.

The policy brief, authored by Dr. Sophie Moss and Professor Rashida Ferrand in collaboration with the trial teams, sets out evidence-based recommendations aimed at improving clinical practice, particularly in resource-limited settings across Africa.

HIV-associated comorbidities remain a significant challenge for children growing up with the virus, even where antiretroviral therapy is widely available. The new findings highlight practical strategies that could strengthen long-term health outcomes and inform national and regional treatment guidelines.

The authors say the recommendations are especially relevant for clinicians, policymakers, and public health practitioners working in paediatric HIV care.
