Background
TB is a syndemic disease often coexisting with or exacerbating chronic conditions such as diabetes, chronic lung disease, mental health disorders, malnutrition, and substance use. TB survivors have disproportionately high rates of MLTCs, contributing to poor post-TB outcomes and socio-economic vulnerability. Zimbabwe has a high burden of TB, HIV, and NCDs, and a history of scalable innovations in public health, making it an ideal setting for this study.
Rationale
The six-month period of TB treatment presents a unique opportunity to provide integrated care for MLTCs. However, TB services remain siloed and do not currently address the syndemic nature of TB. RESTORE seeks to close this gap by integrating mental health, diabetes, nutritional, pulmonary, and peer-led support into the TB care pathway.
Study Design
Pragmatic cluster-randomised controlled trial in 26 polyclinics (13 intervention, 13 control) across Harare, Bulawayo, and Mashonaland East.
