Study title: Cardiac Phenotypes in Pulmonary TB

Lead researchers: Professor Anoop Shah, Professor Katharina Kranzer, Dr. Edith Majonga, Dr Edson Marambire

Funder: Funded by Novo Nordisk Foundation, Denmark.

Partners: Ludwig Maximillian University Munich, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Background: Previous studies have shown a high prevalence of cardiac disease among pulmonary TB patients, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality. However, existing research has used limited methodologies. This study aims to employ advanced imaging and biochemical profiling to better understand cardiac pathology, facilitating improved interventions for TB treatment outcomes and reducing post-TB disability.

Rational: The study aims to utilise advanced imaging and biochemical profiling to gain a deeper understanding of cardiac pathology in patients with pulmonary TB. This will help facilitate improved interventions for tuberculosis treatment outcomes and reduce the risk of post-tuberculosis disability

Study design: This is a single-center observational study designed to assess cardiac pathology in individuals diagnosed with pulmonary TB. The study will recruit 350 adults with microbiologically confirmed pulmonary TB and 150 age- and sex-matched comparators without TB.

Start dates: April 2026
