Dr Farirayi Kowo recently conducted a DXA operator training session at the Well Woman Clinic, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bone health services in Zimbabwe. The training was organized by the Zimbabwe Osteoporosis and Bone Health Association (ZOBS).

Participants received hands-on training in bone mineral density assessment, body composition analysis, and vertebral fracture assessment (VFA), building critical skills for the early detection and management of osteoporosis and fragility fractures.

This work aligns with broader research initiatives such as the Fractures-E3 programme, which is generating important evidence on the burden, risk factors, costs, and outcomes of fractures in Zimbabwe and across sub-Saharan Africa. As populations age, fractures are becoming an increasing public health concern—often leading to disability, reduced quality of life, and even death.

Strengthening DXA capacity and clinical expertise is key to improving diagnosis, guiding treatment, and supporting evidence-based interventions in bone health.

The training was delivered in partnership with THRUZIM and the University of Zimbabwe (UZ), reflecting a shared commitment to advancing research, improving fracture care, and strengthening health systems.
