THRU ZIM recently completed the mid-line survey of the CAMFED livelihoods evaluation study in Umzingwane (Matabeleland South) and Wedza (Mashonaland East). The survey re-engaged 500 adolescent girls and young women benefiting from CAMFED’s educational subsidies and livelihoods programmes across rural Zimbabwe.

The team visited remote communities, gathering rich insights from young women whose voices are often underrepresented—a deliberate effort to ensure even the furthest rural perspectives inform the study. Unique in its scope for THRU ZIM, the project generates evidence to strengthen CAMFED’s support for adolescent girls. By tracking the impact of education subsidies, business skills training, and small grants, the study explores what truly empowers girls to stay in school and improve their quality of life.

The long-term goal is to provide evidence-based pathways to break cycles of poverty affecting adolescent girls and their communities. The final endline survey is scheduled for next year, with findings expected to play a pivotal role in shaping future programmes that enhance young women’s education and livelihoods. This study is a collaboration between CAMFED, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the Biomedical Research and Training Institute, EDI Global, and the Ifakara Health Institute, and is made possible through the support of the Mastercard Foundation
